Philips Experimentele TV foto 1
The construction of an early experimental TV starts with the image mf.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 2
The device was built in modules so that modules could be completely replaced during the experiments.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 3
The image mf module had a receiver for channel 4. This is being built here.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 4
Here the assembled channel 4 reception part.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 5
The first image mf stage is ready and that of course gives the opportunity to test.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 6
The test setup we use a Grundig VG1000 as a measuring transmitter modulated with gray scale black / white.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 7
And this is how the black & white gray trap on modulated looks like on the scope.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 8
If you add another section image mf. Does it look like this.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 9
And on the scope it becomes much clearer. it is therefore an unmodulated video signal which is put on the carrier wave in am.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 10
Here is the 3rd image mf stage mounted.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 11
Here with the necessary tubes.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 12
And then you find out that a tube has not been drilled.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 13
Well... drill and ready extra hole and beyond.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 14
After the demodulator is built some testing.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 15
And that doesn't look like anything.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 16
The demodulator circuit is mounted.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 17
The top with the extra tube base.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 18
Built the video amplifier but.....
Philips Experimentele TV foto 19
The signal did not improve.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 20
The definition of the video signal is just a drama.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 21
But against that, the synchronization separator works fine.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 22
Here you can see that there is something wrong with the video signal.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 23
The assembled image mf module.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 24
The top of the assembled image mf module.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 25
The shaky signal but the solution was suddenly there...
Philips Experimentele TV foto 26
An incorrect resistance value threw a spanner in the works all along.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 27
Now it looks good and even color.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 28
OK then it's time to build the sound module.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 29
The input stage of the first audio mf.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 30
The bandpass filter between the first and second audio mf stage.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 31
The stuff mechanically mounted.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 32
The connections to the bandpass filter.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 33
The construction of the detector.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 34
The detector is built around the EQ80 tube, here the detector coil.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 35
Detector coil mounted.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 36
The EQ80 has been used for a short time and works according to the quadrature detection principle. This is used to demodulate FM with phase shift.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 37
The detector circuit is complete.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 38
The measurement setup.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 39
The two high-frequency signals are phase shiftable.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 40
Almost the 180 degree shift.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 41
Almost no shift.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 42
FM signal.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 43
The circuit.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 44
Here are some measurements on the detector. Here the carrier wave modulated with 50Hz in FM
Philips Experimentele TV foto 45
Carrier wave modulated at 200 Hz in FM.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 46
Carrier wave modulated at 600 Hz in FM.

The measurement setup.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 53
The complete sound module top.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 54
The complete sound module bottom.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 55
Now comes the fun measuring on both image and sound receiver.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 56
Channel 4 in provides demodulated audio and video.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 57
sound detector.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 58
A test around the vertical sync pulse.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 59
With a time delay setting of the scope you can see why sometimes the sound rattles. In this case, a rattle occurred at the frame sync pulse. Here it is reduced to a minimum.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 60
Both modules next to each other.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 61
The power supply because the filament of the tubes are connected in parallel you need a huge power supply transformer.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 62
The structure of the power supply.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 63
Power supply mounted and working. Equipped with plug socket connections for experimental purposes.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 64
The other view of the power supply.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 65
The underside of the power supply.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 66
The deflection and the high voltage.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 67
There are 3 circuits located on this module. The vertical deflection. The horizontal deflection. And the high voltage.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 68
The experimental character lies in the fact that the high voltage runs at 1Khz and is not part of synchronization. This was done in order not to redesign the entire device in the event of a broadcast standard change.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 69
Later, the same principle was applied to multi-standard monitors such as computer monitors.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 70
Here the first tests with the horizontal oscillator.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 71
Here's a view of the horizontal oscillator.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 72
Because I didn't have a correct horizontal deflection transformer I did some tests with a line transformer.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 73
The horizontal deflection transformer is in the tin on the right, what you see here in the photo. This can is empty and we will see it later.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 74
The horizontal steering pulses.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 75
Measured on the anode of the EL34.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 76
The setup is a loose line transformer with a loose deflection yoke attached to it for load.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 77
Another frequency measurement.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 78
Just a frequency measurement to see if we reach 15.625Khz
Philips Experimentele TV foto 79
The loose line transformer.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 80
The top of the whole.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 81
Then we move on to the vertical deflection.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 82
Here the blocking oscillator.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 83
The construction of the vertical deflection.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 84
The vertical deflection impulse. Again with load from the deflection yoke.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 85
The test setup.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 86
Another top view. At this point I didn't have a high voltage can yet.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 87
Although I didn't have a high voltage can yet, I started building the circuit.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 88
The circuit for the high voltage generator is on the left.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 89
The components for the high voltage are on the chassis.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 90
And when you come here you will think what is a TV without a picture tube.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 91
Here the picture tube module. There is little to say about it, there is no more than a tube on it.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 92
Then for the sake of beauty all modules separately together.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 93
A side view but also....
Philips Experimentele TV foto 94
A rear view....
Philips Experimentele TV foto 95
A top view.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 96
We have the high voltage can now we can test.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 97
A kilovolt or 6 is enough for this picture tube.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 98
Just an idea of the deflection generators and the high voltage.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 99
And then it's time where we build the stuff into a chassis.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 100
Put the chassis on the trestle and connect module by module.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 101
The modules are connected to each other with a wire harness.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 102
Here all modules mounted on the chassis.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 103
Just connect the sound part.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 104
Everything is on and on.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 105
The question arises could it work.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 106
We know that some loose parts work, but in a whole is still the question.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 107
We still miss the horizontal deflection transformer, but that doesn't stop us from testing.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 108
The grid saw works and to be able to see some image...
Philips Experimentele TV foto 109
We just used a separate line transformer.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 110
And now we don't have a focus control yet.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 111
And here's the first slightly visible image.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 112
Some tinkering with light dark contrast.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 113
Some more tinkering.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 114
This is how it looks with the separate line transformer.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 115
The grid is a bit small and horribly distorted.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 116
Some tinkering yields sufficient amplitude. Due to the loose character of the horizontal deflection, this has been omitted for a while.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 117
The vertical deflection.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 118
The light dark scheme.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 119
A test with the horizontal deflection. It's not quite what you expect.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 120
Wrap a new transformer.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 121
The picture hmm...
Philips Experimentele TV foto 122
The deflection pulses.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 123
The test setup.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 124
And well....
Philips Experimentele TV foto 125
It's not working well you can say.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 126
New horizontal deflection transformer.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 127
The picture looks really good.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 128
An overview of the whole.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 129
The pulses.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 130
The damping diode it really burns.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 131
The transformer
Philips Experimentele TV foto 132
The image looks good, no weird bumps.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 133
The transformer works well enough. Time for installation.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 134
The transformer here in the tin ready for pouring.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 135
The transformer molded into the can.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 136
On the chassis.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 137
And image wow it finally works.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 138
An overview image and chassis.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 139
And for the enthusiast image and sound. An experimental television completely rebuilt.
Philips Experimentele TV foto 140
The example of which the television has been recreated. This is an early experimental television that has been used for all kinds of testing. This device was never marketed.
